Victor Alli, London
Morning everyone! Hope you all had a good weekend. Its been an early morning for me today with a quick trip to the gym at 7 and I'm on a train to London as I type this post. However I wanted to introduce today's creative on The SBc Journal. London based Victor Alli. This 20 year old East Londoner has three close siblings and apart from photography is also into acting and music. Progressing from the drums when he was three to piano, bass and finally electric guitar. But today we are going to focus on his skills behind the lens. Victor took some time out from his various endeavours to answer a few questions about his thoughts on film, his first camera and his definition of her modern 'photographer'
What influences your photography style Victor?
I suppose a lot of things but I'd say it’ll have to be my my subject. As obvious as this seems, I think it’s either second nature or ignored. If you’re conscious of your subject, you’re probably going to at least try and present it in a natural looking way. Or maybe an unnatural contextual juxtaposition. I think either is fine and I do both. I try to look for all of the elements to put into the same frame.
Analog or Digital?
My first camera was an analogue camera. A fujifilm. It was chunky and heavy. I was about 13 when my dad got for me. I didn’t really know its worth and I ended up wrecking in.
I guess its convenient to shoot digital. It’s instant photography, where you can use memory cards and delete photos in 2.1 seconds, without worrying about film and processing costs. The sheer speed and flexibility of digital has removed some of the creativity that went into creating even the simplest of shots.
Don’t get me wrong I love digital and use it nearly everyday, but Analogue will always be my first love.
Any favourite photographers at the moment?
At the moment...um, Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Annie Leibovitz, Nadav Kander and Nicholas Maggio. They’re great, they’re just amazing, amazing humans!!!
It seems that everyone is a photographer these days, Apps like Instagram have definitely made it easier for people to be creative. What in your opinion is the modern definition of a photographer?
Well, a photographer is a person who takes photos, and I guess the modern definition of a photographer is still a person who takes photos, but is also able to manifest creativity and capture what no one else sees behind the lens. They’re able to capture moments that cannot be relived again. They have the ability to captivate all audiences and leave them in awe. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and a modern photographer can capture that picture.
What does the future hold for Victor?
Well, I'm enjoying what I’m doing right now. Photography, writing, acting, music. These all keep me busy and occupied which all help me to stay creative. If I’m able to excel in any of these fields then that would be amazing.
